Every April, music lovers and vinyl collectors around the world eagerly anticipate one of the most celebrated events in the music retail calendar: Record Store Day. What began as a grassroots movement in the United States has grown into a global phenomenon that brings together independent music stores, passionate fans, and exclusive physical releases. But beyond the long lines and special editions, what’s the story behind this annual celebration? Here are six key facts that shed light on the origins, impact, and evolution of Record Store Day.

Launched in 2008
Record Store Day (RSD) was first conceived in 2007 and officially held in 2008 in the United States as a celebration of independent music stores. This day was created to honor the culture of physical record stores and bring fans closer to musicians and physical releases like vinyl.

Celebrated Globally
Although it started in the US, Record Store Day is now celebrated in over 20 countries, including the UK, Japan, Germany, and Indonesia. Each year, music lovers around the world gather to hunt for limited releases, attend intimate concerts, and join meet & greets with artists.

Offers Exclusive and Limited Releases
One of RSD’s main attractions is its exclusive releases available only on that day—ranging from colored vinyl, box sets, and live recordings, to albums that had never been physically released before. Many of these are produced in extremely limited quantities.

Boosts Physical Music Store Sales
RSD has become an important moment that significantly boosts sales for independent music stores. In some countries, vinyl sales during April (when RSD typically takes place) can spike dramatically compared to other months.

A New Ambassador Is Chosen Every Year
Each year, Record Store Day appoints a musician to serve as its ambassador, representing the spirit of the event. Notable artists like Jack White, Metallica, Run the Jewels, Taylor Swift, and Pearl Jam have all served as RSD ambassadors.

RSD Reached Indonesia 13 Years Ago
Record Store Day first arrived in Indonesia through an event at a store called Monka Magic at Aksara Kemang, Jakarta, in 2012 and 2013. It later moved to Heyfolks! the following year, and today, Record Store Day events have spread across various cities in Indonesia.
