How We Choose Songs for a Licensing Shortlist

When a music brief comes in, the first step is not simply finding a song that sounds good.

A song can feel right creatively, but still need further rights verification. On the other hand, a song may be ready from a rights perspective but not serve the creative direction of the scene.

That is why we look at two things when selecting song candidates: creative fit and verified clearance readiness.

1. Creative Fit: Does the Song Work for the Story?

The first filter is about how well the music fits the creative need.

We look at several elements, including mood, narrative role, tempo, language, and duration.

Mood helps determine the emotional character of a scene or campaign. Narrative role looks at what the music needs to do: build tension, create space, support a transition, or help a moment stay memorable.

Tempo, language, and duration also matter because they can affect how naturally a song fits into the structure and pacing of the content.

The goal is not simply to find a good song, but to find a song that has a clear creative reason for being there.

2. Verified Clearance Readiness: Can the Use Be Properly Cleared?

Creative fit is only one part of the process.

The next filter is whether the song's rights situation can be verified for the intended use. This includes checking the rights holder, licence scope, territory, term, media, timing, and the status that can be supported by available documentation.

These details help establish whether a song can move forward for a specific licensing need and what needs to be addressed before the use can be cleared.

This is important because creative suitability does not automatically mean licensing readiness.

Two Filters, One Shortlist

A strong candidate needs to make sense from both sides.

First: Does the song fit the creative brief?

Second: Can its rights and intended use be properly verified and assessed?

Looking at both helps create a shortlist that is not only relevant to the creative direction, but also grounded in the information needed for the next stage of the licensing process.
