Language Is No Longer the Barrier: What a Diversifying US Market Means for Songwriters Everywhere

For decades, the world's biggest music market had one unofficial entry requirement: sing in English. That requirement is dissolving — measurably.

Luminate's latest data (July 2026) shows English-language music fell to 86% of US on-demand audio streams through Q1 2026, down 2.1 share points from the same period a year earlier, continuing a long-term decline. Spanish-language music reached a historic 9.5% — nearly one in ten US streams. Korean holds 1.1%. And the most telling number for everyone else: all other languages surged to 3.4% of US streams, up 1.5 points over 2025.

Zoom out and the pattern is global. Spotify's Loud & Clear 2026 reported that songs in 16 different languages reached its Global Top 50 in 2025 — more than double the number in 2020. Casual listenership of Latin music among US listeners climbed from 41% in early 2024 to 56% in Q1 2026. Streaming infrastructure has turned language from a barrier into a point of connection.

For Indonesian songwriters, this is the structural opening: the gatekeeper model that required Western adaptation is weakening. A song can now travel on its own terms — if the infrastructure behind it can.

That "if" is where publishing does its quiet work. A composition can only earn abroad when it is registered correctly, its writers and splits are documented, and its rights are represented in the territories where it travels. At Massive Music Entertainment, we connect Indonesian works to the international collection network through our sub-publishing partnership with peermusic — so when a song finds listeners across borders, its royalties have a route home.

The market is opening. The question for every catalog owner: is your repertoire administratively ready to travel?

Luminate's Midyear Report lands July 15 — we will break down what it says about global repertoire flows.
