The Power of Attribution: Why You Must Credit the Songwriter in Every Project

In the fast moving creative industry, using songs for commercial purposes, from digital cover releases to background music for films and series, has become a daily routine. However, behind the glamour of a visual production or audio release, there is one fundamental obligation that users often overlook. That obligation is crediting the identity of the songwriter.

Many people assume that once they secure a synchronization or economic license, they have complete freedom to use the work. This is a massive misconception. In copyright law, there are Moral Rights that remain eternally attached to an artist. One of the main pillars of these Moral Rights is the right of attribution. This is the absolute right of the creator to always be recognized and have their name included every time their work is published to the public.

Writing the name of the songwriter is not merely an industry formality. It is the highest form of respect for the identity of the creator. A song is born from a deeply personal creative process, and the name attached to it is authentic proof of their hard work. Erasing the name of the creator is the exact same as wiping out the historical footprint of the work itself.
Legally, this is strictly regulated. According to Article 5 of the Indonesian Copyright Law, a creator has the exclusive right to have their name attached to the public use of their creation.

Furthermore, this moral right also protects the integrity of the work. This means song users are absolutely not allowed to change the arrangement, modify the lyrics, or distort the work without explicit written permission from the rights holder.

For filmmakers, creative agencies, and commercial content creators, understanding and applying this rule is a crucial step in maintaining professionalism. Do not let a minor negligence in your credit title lead to legal warnings that damage your corporate reputation.

Make sure every work you use always meets the standards of legal and ethical compliance. With Massive Music Entertainment, the process of legality and copyright administration
becomes much more directed, ensuring every party gets their rightful due and your project can be published safely.
